It's no secret that the global financial crisis has already had an impact on Japan and other markets. It's not the first recession we've seen, but its certainly one to be taken seriously. We are continuing to invest in talent and areas that we see as important for growth, and importantly for areas that will be a great value-add for our clients -- particularly business consulting rejuvenations, digital, marketing services and corporate communications. I think the unique structure of our agency (one bottom line - truly integrated and truly a global network) will put us in a solid position going forward. We are not large enough to be conventional media-driven agencies, but we are small enough to be the right business partner for our clients, as being flexible and able to adjust is an advantage.

Obviously a big catch phrase at this time is "effectiveness" and that is so important for us, as well as our clients. We must be effective in our work and our ideas. This is already a mantra that is at the core of our culture (CBI: Creative Business Ideas - in effect, business solutions), so it's a natural fit with what we would provide our clients in a recession or not. The word of "Survivability" is all over the Japanese media, and I believe our unique agency proposition can help clients in the "how". To do so, we have to be even more diligent and smarter during tough times. Effectiveness is also connected to our focus in digital, marketing services and corporate communications, all of which are extremely measurable and targeted.

As an agency that provides business solutions for the growth of our clients' businesses, the recession is in some ways an opportunity for us to prove our value to clients, and it's imperative that we do so.
